Come listen to Palestinian activists from the West Bank, Mira Dabit and Hanna Qassis, who will share with us the challenges facing students and young people who live under Israel’s military occupation, and who struggle to put an end to it. By supporting divestment, they stand with student activists from across the US, who have been pushing their campuses to divest from Israeli occupation, as well as student activists in Palestin…e, such as Mira and Hanna, whose very right to an education and ability to be a student is profoundly impacted by the Israeli occupation. Mira and Hanna’s stories provide a compelling argument for why we divest, and why all of us who struggle for peace and justice in the region should divest, as well. Hanna Qassis is from the town of Birzeit, Palestine. He graduated from Birzeit University in 2006 with a BA in Business Administration, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Studies, also at Birzeit University. In addition to working for the Academy for Educational Development in the West Bank, Hanna is a political and youth activist and volunteers with several Palestinian civil society organizations. Born in Jerusalem to a refugee family originally from the 1948 city of Al Lod, Mira Dabit has been an political and youth worker, as well as a folkloric storyteller for many years. She received her BA in psychology and sociology from Birzeit University, and upon graduation went to live and volunteer in Ireland, north and south, where she worked with community initiatives for three years. Now, Mira has returned to Palestine and to continue her work and activism with the Right to Education campaign at Birzeit University, with theater projects for youth and with other initiatives that strive to make marginalized voices heard. |

More Info WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO COME TO THIS DEMONSTRATION TO SUPPORT THE PEOPLE OF LIBYA, BAHRAIN, YEMEN AND OTHER MIDDLE EASTERN NATIONS THAT FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY. OUR DEMANDS: – The Obama Administration to issue support of regime change where non violent protesters in Libya, Bahrain, Yemen, and other Middle Eastern nations are being mercilessly executed for democratic demands. regime in the region that is accused of violence against protesters. – We must educate the public about what is going on in the Middle East. We as Americans believe in democratic values and freedom. Why? The Tunisian people are free as Ben Ali was ousted following the mass protests in Egypt where Mubarak was disgracefully kicked out. We lobbied our politicians, we protested, and most Arizonians supported our call for Democracy and Freedom in the Middle East. It doesn’t stop there, Libyans casualties estimates are increasing by the day as the Army deployed is shooting live gun fire at non violent protesters. In spite of that, Benghazi which is a major city is under protesters control. In Bahrain, Pearl Square is under the control of the civilian protesters and they still hold resilient in defying the Monarchy. They were shooting at FUNERALS and women! In Yemen, pro government protesters were harassing the opposition with the support of the police. There is no order in Yemen as violence erupts. From Green Square [Libya] to Pearl Square [Bahrain] to Tahrir Square [Yemen] WE WILL PROTEST AT DOWNTOWN PHOENIX AT OUR OWN SQUARE TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR THE PROTESTERS Contact: Oday Shahin — pr@sjpalestine.com — 480 710 6660 |

In demonstrations that are sweeping the Arab world, thousands of protesters in Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, and Yemen are demanding the resignations of the autocratic leaders of their nations.
Recently, in Tunisia, popular protests led to the ousting of President Ben Ali. These successful protests have raised hopes worldwide in nearby Arab countries that suffer under similarly repressive regimes.  As public unrest continues to grow, demonstrations against  unemployment, inflated food prices, lack of political reform, and basic rights (like the freedom of speech or freedom of political expression) have spread throughout the Middle East.
Egyptian activists opposed to President Hosni Mubarak’s three-decade regime danced outside the Tunisian Embassy in Cairo chanting, “Ben Ali, tell Mubarak a plane is waiting for him too!†according to the Associated Press.
In a speech on Friday, President Obama strongly defended the right of Egyptian protesters to gather and demand political change, cautioning the government of President Hosni Mubarak to avoid violence and adopt “concrete steps that advance the rights†of the country’s citizens.
Today, we as American citizens ask President Obama to take concrete steps to support self-determination for those in the Middle East calling for true democracy and freedom.
U.S. military aid to authoritarian regimes in the Middle East like Egypt, Jordan, and Yemen enables these regimes to use force with impunity to silence its citizens and destroy political opposition. Acting in solidarity with the protesters in the Middle East, we demand that the Obama administration cut off U.S. military aid to any governments that deny their citizens basic human rights and freedoms.

Liberating Gaza: A discussion with Huwaida Arraf (Nov 9)
Huwaida Arraf, a Palestinian-American activist, is the co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) and chairperson of the Free Gaza Movement.
ISM advocates grassroots nonviolent resistance as a way to end the Israeli occupation and the Free Gaza Movement is most notable for organizing humanitarian aid ships to the blockaded Gaza Strip.
In addition to speaking about her activism in nonviolent resistance to occupation, Huwaida Arraf will also share her experiences on the Freedom Flotilla that was raided by Israeli commandos last May. She was aboard the Challenger 1, which was the smallest boat in the flotilla that included the Mavi Marmara.
A fact-finding mission by the United Nations found that “a series of violations of international law, including international humanitarian and human rights law, were committed by the Israeli forces” during the attack on the civilian flotilla. The U.N. report also found that at least 6 of the casualties were killed in “extra-legal, arbitrary and summary executions” by the Israeli Defense Force.
Following her talk, there will be an audience Q/A session.
This event will be held on November 9th at 7PM in SCOB 210, ASU tempe campus.
